This year, Barbie has been
everyone's motto. The fashion industry has entirely given in to the new
"Barbie Core" style of head-to-toe pink since the premiere of the
Barbie movie. In 1959, American Ruth Handler urged her husband to create a new prototype
for the doll, which initiated the creation of Barbie. It was groundbreaking
when Barbie was accused in the 1970s of encouraging unhealthy gender ideals
that were damaging to young people. Barbie didn't become timeless until over 60
years after her inception, but that was only considering the doll was
constantly reinterpreted over time—particularly in terms of fashion.
Barbie has been a pop culture icon since the 1980s, and she has inspired many fashion collections. One of the most iconic remains Jeremy Scott's Spring/Summer 2015 runway show, in which the designer "plagiarized" Barbie's features into his own creations. These included: lots of candy pink, platinum blonde wigs, super-fitted mini-dresses and mirrored phone cases.
The Barbie Core of 2023
In 2023, fashion designers are going to include pink tones into their collections by utilizing this soft color. The hallmark color for Valentino's Fall/Winter 2022–2023 collection is pink. Versace reimagined the blazer in sweet pink this year, while Marine Serre clothed a Barbie tennis player. Chanel employed pink in a more understated way, Moschino modernized Barbie, and Courrèges debuted a translucent garment. But Jonathan Anderson of Loewe took home the win by taking another look at Barbie's accessories. Rubber-effect shoes were a common sight at his most recent performance.
